Dewey Crumpler: Sonic Lineages

The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) is pleased to announce the landmark exhibition Dewey Crumpler: Sonic Lineages, the Oakland-based artist, muralist, and educator’s first major solo museum presentation in nearly two decades, and his first ever at a San Francisco museum.

Curated by Key Jo Lee and on view from September 30, 2026 through May 30, 2027, the exhibition will debut new kinetic sculptures and features three distinct series of paintings. Sonic Lineages transmits Crumpler’s legacy into new multi-sensory realms and places his work into dialogue with themes from jazz music, all while asserting his central presence in Bay Area cultural life. Works on view will demonstrate his impact on the history of Black abstraction, and his enduring influence on future generations of African diasporic artists both in the region and internationally.
