The California coastline is known for its beauty — a state defined by strikingly varied ecosystems, where city centers create a multicultural landscape of people, sound, and language, meshing into a culture that is unique and nuanced. The West Coast dares to pioneer, to experiment and explore. Its systems of artistry are complex, varied in output, shaped by the grand topography of this stretch of coastline.

There is a freedom here to create, a boldness to speak — for the mother of nature, for social concern, nurtured from a 'laid-back' way of life that quietly shapes amazing artists and amazing artistry.

The output from the West Coast, to this point, is significant. What matters now is to unify without homogenizing — to hold the voice of our culture and legacy with care. Artists are the visual griots of this moment.

Art eXodus represents the dialogue of these voices — a conversation between the Bay Area and Los Angeles, north and south, each carrying the ecosystems that shape their practice. The exhibition maps a coastline that is less about geography and more about lineage, memory, and the forces — cultural and natural — that shape Black artistic practice across the West.

Featuring the work of Shinique Smith, David Huffman, Mario Joyce, Micaiah Carter, Adrian Burrell, Angela Hennessy, Kenturah Davis, Edgar Arceneaux, Nya Serano, and Brandon Ruffin, with performance artists Darréll Dunn and Monique Jonath, and Poet Laureate Dr. Nzinga — each offering their own artistic discourse within this larger coastal conversation.
Art eXodus opens as part of NeXus Black Art Week, presented at Four One Nine, a creative ecosystem, studio, and agency where community and culture thrive, with scheduled programming throughout the run of the exhibition.
